As happens so often with me, my first version of Charing Cross went a little too dark.  I redid it trying to keep it a little lighter.  I think I have more or less succeeded.  I’m definitely happier with the composition.  The lower horizon line suits the subject better.  I’ve also tightened up the perspective.

The first version can be seen here.

I’m really enjoying the architectural paintings of England, Rex. I think it’s some of the strongest work I’ve seen of yours. There is a lot to “visit” in each painting. Interesting to see how the buildings are kind of ephemeral and the people are the solid, anchoring shapes. Looking forward to seeing more!

Thanks Shelley. For me this series has been a real epiphany. It’s solidified and advanced my understanding of value and it’s been liberating to finally integrate my love of drawing both figures and building into my painting. So I’m also looking forward to seeing more. Rex
