I really like the loose treatment of the out-of-focus background and the background light in this painting. Real sense of depth, and adds to the mood of the painting. The rusty red on the right is also really nice with the chartreuse in the trees to the left of the truck. The separation of the red/green complimentary combo in the background and the orangy/blue complimentary combo in the foreground is neat too. Are these the guache additions?
Yes, most of the things you mentioned were added with gouache. I love working with those opaque mediums because I can correct all those things that I don’t think about fast enough in the watercolour stage of the painting. This painting took on a new life with the gouache. I agree about the sense of depth. I’m still not sure how to achieve that all the time. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn’t. That’s all part of what makes art such a journey. It’s all about discovery. Thanks so much for your informed comments.
