I’ve found my new plein air paradise, namely Kensington a very varied and interesting neighbourhood in Calgary. Lots of street life. I spent yesterday and today doing some plein air painting there. I’m very pleased with the process I used. Get a good composition and then work out a value pattern. I’m also happy with the actual paintings I did. I find it best for me at this point to thing of plein air painting as a time to gather information. If the painting works out that’s always a bonus.
So I definitely got lots of ideas and had a fun and satisfying experience.
Nice to see you documenting the architecture of Calgary again, Rex. I really like your plein air work. These ones are an interesting mix of styles between your Curry Barracks series and your England paintings – very neat. I’ve just noticed how lovely your use of yellow has been on the buildings, glass and skys in a lot of your recent paintings . So striking with some of the blue-greys. I also like the orange/green combo in the middle painting (my favorite of this triad…although…hmmm…the 3rd one is so lovely too…).
Hi Shelley: This transition from the England paintings to Calgary architecture is a significant development so I’m pleased that you see value in them. I feel I’m learning and pushing my craft forward on an almost daily basis. I have a strong sense that this will all lead somewhere interesting.
