It Had To Happen

These videos are an extension of my classes and I have been pleased to share them with my students and any one else who is interested.  I do enjoy making them and it’s very fulfilling to hear from people how much they get from them.  Having said that they do take a lot of time and, as my wife says, I need to maximize everything to do with teaching so, unfortunately, I need to try to use them in a new way.  Therefore I will be placing some of them in a new page that is just for my students and perhaps at a later time to people who would like to subscribe to them.  I will continue to make free videos available on this site so keep coming back.

For my students please proceed to the Watercolour Class page.

Kensington

Rex Beanland, Kensington, watercolour, 9 x 12

This is the painting created in this week’s video lesson.  The subject is one of Calgary’s more interesting neighbourhoods.

Charing Cross, London

Rex Beanland, Charing Cross, watercolour, 9 12

This weeks video clip is not really that difficult but it does contain quite a few elements.  It’s my interpretation of a view of a street corner in Charing Cross, London.

Hi Rex great job with the video , I am sure it will help every one. see you Wednesday

    • Rex Beanland says:

Hi Judy, thanks for the comment. I had a real blast doing them and it’s great to know that you found them helpful.

  2. Rose says:

    Hi Rex,

I’m finding the videos very helpful. It’s not at easy as it looks but it’s fun to play around with the paint. Thank you for doing this. It helps to have you here as a reminder of all the steps involved.

    • Rex Beanland says:

That’s great Rose. We want to take as much time as necessary to get comfortable with the paint/water thing then we can move ahead really quickly.

  3. Good video, Rex. It helps to listen to your thinking as you decide on mixes and what to put where. Keep going with these videos!

    • Rex Beanland says:

      Hi Sheila:

Thanks for the comments. I really enjoy doing them but it’s particularly gratifying when I get a response that they are helping people.

      Rex

  4. Hi Rex,
I watched all the videos and thought they are great. Good use of the colour wheel and complimentary colours. A good start to the study of colour period. I really liked your production of the pure gray with the use of the colours. I’m very impressed. The shadows in the water were informative for me. I got something out of all of the videos.

    • Rex Beanland says:

      Hi Rose:

Hey, thanks a lot for your comments. I’m very glad that an experienced painter like yourself would get something out of them.

      Rex

  5. I also like your little contest. Very nice way to pique people’s intereset and get comments! rosemary

  6. Julie says:

Rex I think that you did a fantastic job with the videos are they in mass production yet???

    • Rex Beanland says:

      Hi Julie:

Thank you very much for your comments. We are just working on a way to allow people to get copies of these videos and more.

      Stay tuned.

      Rex

  7. Judy Foster says:

Hi Rex as before the video clips are helping so much see you on the 27.

  8. Good morning, Rex. I am at Millarville school today. Unfortunately, this computer is without audio, so, when i watch the video you are miming the class. This is still helpful, mind you, but there is one other hitch. The video streaming is slow and interupted. You look different. Are you actually drunk while instructing?
    Your fan,
    Maria vanderham

    • Rex Beanland says:

      Hi Maria:

It must be the school’s connection because I wasn’t actually drunk. If you found it helpful without sound and with me acting like I’m drunk imagine what it would be like viewing it normally.

      Rex

  9. Laurie McDonald says:

    Hi Rex,

I found the videos very interesting, fun to watch and easy to listen to. I have absolutely no art education, so learned quite a bit about some important basics that would help a novice to know where to start. Great work! Your other fan mentioned that there was a lag, no volume and you seemed drunk. It was perfectly clear for me and you looked better than ever. I was amused by the occasional added message of “he meant such and such color”.

Hope this continues to go well for you.
    Laurie

    • Rex Beanland says:

You’re right. My other fan was pretty rough on me. Your comments are much nicer and very well informed. All joking aside, thanks for this. It’s very interesting to get the perspective of someone who has little experience in art.
Also . . . you’re entered in the draw twice.

      Thanks,

      Rex

  10. Judy Foster says:

Hi Rex great VIDEO CLIPS, and I like all the bad hair talk Ha Ha
cant waite for the next enstalment.. Judy

    • Rex Beanland says:

      Hi Judy:

I’ll have to tell my wife that you liked the bad hair. She’ll enjoy that.

Thanks for your comments on the videos.

      Rex

  11. Judy Foster says:

this whole video clips is a woulderful first attempt, you and your wife are doing a great job. I had forgoten so much from the class and it was a great reminder. keep up the good work Judy

    • Rex Beanland says:

Thanks Judy. I’m finding it’s not only fun to do them but I’m learning so much. When you’re painting on camera you have to make decisions quickly and decisively. Some decisions work and some don’t but either way you learn a lot from doing it.

      Rex

  12. Valerie says:

    Hi Rex,

My grand-daughter Emily and I thoroughly enjoyed watching how one of your pictures could be created with just one colour. The depth and contrasts were amazing and you are certainly an amazing and talented artist.

  13. Andrea says:

    Hi Rex,

I really enjoyed watching your videos and thought they were very detailed and well explained. I especially enjoyed learning about creating gray as well and dark and light values. My favorite is the West Coast scene, seeing how the painting comes alive. You are a very talented artist and I cannot wait to see more video’s and paintings.

    Andrea

    • Rex Beanland says:

Thanks for the comments Andrea. It’s very gratifying when people enjoy them or learn something, especially if they let me know.
And . . . you’re now entered in the contest twice. I hear Emily liked them, too. You may have a painter on your hand.

      Take care,

      Rex

  14. karin huehold says:

    Hi Rex
I really enjoyed these. Very informative and lots of great material. Your instruction is clear and the timing of the paintings is very nice. If I were a beginner watercolour painter, I would have liked to know more about the wetness and dryness of the paper. When you are adding washes or colour, maybe a comment about the paper and what it is doing…………?
    Great stuff!!!
    Karin

    • Rex Beanland says:

      Hi Karin:

Nice to get a comment from an experienced painter like yourself. Interesting feedback. I’ll see if I can add more of that wetness stuff because with watercolour the condition of the paper and the amount of water/paint on the brush are so important.

      Rex

  15. Kay McWilliam says:

I was very impressed with your painting video. For a beginner like me, the video gave me excellent instruction on the basics of painting. When I listened to the video, you weren’t stuttering and stammering and you came through loud and clear. Also, you had a good steady hand to paint and you made painting look easy to do. Good job, Rex.

    • Rex Beanland says:

      Hi Kay:

Thanks for your comments. It’s very gratifying when beginning or even non-painters comment and say that they found it useful. It makes me feel like I’m on the right track.

      Rex

  16. Susan says:

    Hi Rex
I really enjoyed the video. It amazes me that you can do so much with such a limited pallette. You certainly honoured the beauty of the Iris in this video. As a painter looking to be inspired I would have appreciated being wowed, at the intro to the video, by seeing the completed picture. Having the completed picture as a visual captures my attention and curiosity….How did he create this picture? Then the adventure begins as I follow along and discover all the interesting techniques and tips you skillfully use in order to teach the use of watercolour. Did you use reference material or did you make up this picture? Great work. Keep it up. Susan

    • Rex Beanland says:

      Hi Susan:

Thanks for the comments. It’s good when people see it with fresh eyes. I never thought of having the image there as an enticement but it’s a good idea.

      Rex

  17. Judy Foster says:

Again the class was great and these video clips are wounderful, thanks Rex for all the great work you are doing. See you next week Judy

  18. NANCY OSADCHUK says:

Hi Rex, great clips…You explain as you are working which is always helpful. I’ve not done much watercolour for several years and need a ‘kickstart’ refresher, so will see you at Karin’s, on the 28th! Thanks for doing these videos

    • Rex Beanland says:

      Hi Nancy:

What a pleasant surprise. If a painting pro like yourself says she got something out of it that’s high praise.

      Thanks,

      Rex

  19. jude o'gorman says:

Looking forward to your workshop with the Bragg Creek Painter’s !!!!
and to meeting you and playing !!!!!

    • Rex Beanland says:

      Hi Jude:

Thanks so much for your comments. I’m really looking forward to that workshop as well. We’ll see you there.

      Rex

  20. NANCY OSADCHUK says:

Great videos Rex, I have not done much watercolour for several years and am looking forward to your workshop on the 28th..will give me a ‘kickstart’ to get back to it. Like the way you explain as you go along. THanks for doing these.

  21. Hi Rex,

The Iris videos reinforced the lesson really well. Lots of good info, reminders about the “thirsty” brush and the wetness of paper are so helpful. I can’t wait to see what happens on my painting!

    • Rex Beanland says:

      Hi Sheila:

I’m really pleased that they helped you. I also can’t wait to see what happens with your painting.

      Rex

  22. Great videos. Clear concise instruction and a beautiful painting. I will certainly tell my students to have a look. I look forward to booking you for a demo for the sketch club in the fall.

    • Rex Beanland says:

Thanks a lot Mary Leigh. I’d love to do a demo for the sketch club. I’m also glad you liked the videos.

      Rex

  23. Kay McWilliam says:

I am very impressed that you had before you a blank canvas and that you created a beautiful piece of art . You painted something from every day life like a beautiful flower not an abstract painting with dots. You finished the painting in 25 minutes which is a very good time. Keep challenging yourself. Great work, Rex.

    • Rex Beanland says:

      Hi Kay:

Thanks for the comments. I hope to keep challenging myself because that’s the way I’ll continue to grow.

      Rex
