Rex Beanland is a master watercolourist and a master teacher of watercolour. Many years ago he was bitten by the watercolour bug and he has remained true to that medium. Something in that mysterious interaction between water and pigment continues to fascinate and inspire him.

“The nature of water is such that it can’t be controlled. Being a watercolourist is like riding a wild horse. I’m not always sure where it’s going but if I just hold on and enjoy the ride I get rewarded with wonderful surprises.”

"For me painting is about storytelling and as I observe people working, playing or just hanging around I find myself drawn to their stories and that’s what I want to capture."

He is recognized as a master teacher who is able to meet the needs of all his students from beginner to advanced. He credits his experience as a public school teacher with his success in teaching art. “Through my career as a teacher I learned the best ways to get a new idea or technique across to students so they improve quickly and easily.”

The most important advice he would offer to those wishing to learn or improve their art is to “just do it”! “You already have all the ability you need. Just keep painting and keep learning. And most importantly enjoy the ride.”
