Painting A Landscape With Three Colours

redBarn

This is the composition I’m going to use in the next watercolour class.  It’s a very simple vehicle for using a triadic colour scheme.  A triadic colour scheme means you can use only a red, a yellow and a blue, but you can use any red, any yellow and any blue.  In this image I used Quinacridone Red, Naples Yellow and Dioxazine Purple.  The dominant colour was the quinacridone red.  After using cad red light for so long I’m enjoying the transparent quinacridone red.  This exercise is very similar to last week’s except that now we are using a little colour.  It’s still at heart a value exercise.

This is the image that I painted in my latest video clip.  I know that I’ve featured variations of this image a few times lately but it’s a very useful painting to do.  Since it’s a monochromatic painting (only 1 colour) the only variable available to use is value so it’s a great introduction to painting.  It’s very simple but it incorporates a lot of very useful watercolour techniques.  Anyway the video, which shows every step in the painting process is available right here.  If you find it useful I’d sure like to have you comment on this page or the video clip page.
